Mitsubishi Power gets hydrogen power demonstration facility
Mitsubishi Power said on Tuesday that it will set up the world’s first centre for validation of hydrogen-related technologies, from hydrogen production to power generation, at Takasago Machinery Works.
The Takasago Hydrogen Park will be constructed adjacent to the gas turbine development and manufacturing facility of MHI’s Takasago Machinery Works in Hyogo Prefecture, and will start testing hydrogen production and storage as well as combustion technology in gas turbines by 2023, Mitsubishi Power said in a statement.
The new hydrogen park will allow the company to generate enough hydrogen for the Japanese energy market whilst also enabling Mitsubishi to commercialise its hydrogen gas turbine technology by 2025.
“The hydrogen production facility utilises a water electrolysis system, and Mitsubishi Power plans to conduct successive testing and verification of other next-generation hydrogen production technologies such as turquoise-hydrogen production by pyrolysis of methane into hydrogen and solid carbon, etc,” the company said.
Mitsubishi Power had earlier announced a 30 percent hydrogen co-firing for large frame gas turbines. The company will use Takasago Hydrogen Park to commercialise small and large frame gas turbines to reach 100 percent hydrogen firing starting in 2025.
The company said that in order to begin commercialisation of hydrogen gas turbines by 2025, they have begun verification of large gas turbines.
