Vegetable oil can be changed into renewable diesel at Strathcona refinery in Alberta.

Exxon’s Imperial Oil, one of Canada's biggest oil producers and refiners, said it has put a plan to process vegetable oil into renewable diesel at its 191,000-barrel-per-day Strathcona refinery in Alberta.

The company said that the diesel production is expected to realize about 3 million tonnes per year in emissions reductions in the Canadian transportation sector. The production will begin in 2024.

Renewable diesel production will source blue hydrogen, the company said, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to conventional hydrogen production.

“The blue hydrogen and biofeedstock will be combined with a proprietary catalyst to produce premium low-carbon diesel fuel,” the company said.
