First green steel to be produced in the MENA region
UAE’s TAQA, a leading integrated utilities in the region, partnered with Emirates Steel to develop a large-scale green hydrogen project which would make the first green steel produced in the MENA region.
“The hydrogen will enable green and low carbon steel manufacturing, saving energy while creating a sustainable and clean manufacturing process,” said the company in the statement.
The partnership will put the groundwork for the project design to be expanded to meet the anticipated growth in international demand for low carbon steel, the companies added.
"Finding commercially viable industrial-scale solutions like this is key to unlocking the potential of green hydrogen as an emerging clean energy source," said Jasim Thabet, Taqa's group chief executive and managing director in a statement.
TAQA is looking to increase the share of renewable energy within its portfolio by 30 percent by 2030.
