Bilfinger, a global leader in industrial services, is set to expand its operations in Egypt after securing a significant Project Management and Consultancy (PMC) contract from Egyptian Chemical Industries (KIMA). This partnership is focused on the construction of a new chemical and fertiliser plant at KIMA's existing site in Aswan, which will considerably boost local production capabilities.

With a projected daily output of 600 tonnes of nitric acid, the new facility will play a key role in increasing KIMA’s capacity. Abdel Meguid Heguazi, CEO of KIMA, highlighted the importance of the project: “As a worldwide exporter of chemical products, this new plant is crucial for growing our production capabilities in Aswan. By the end of 2027, it will allow us to produce 800 tonnes of granulated ammonium nitrate in fertiliser quality per day, which will be delivered to clients locally and around the world. We trust that Bilfinger will be the perfect solution partner to represent us in all project phases along the way and to make sure that we meet our targets most efficiently.”

Following the official signing on 12 August, Bilfinger’s Middle East division has allocated a team of specialist engineers to provide independent design reviews and site supervision services. Their role is to ensure that the third-party contractor consortium meets KIMA’s high expectations. Bilfinger will oversee all aspects of engineering, procurement, and construction, from pre-commissioning and commissioning to performance testing.

The collaboration marks a significant milestone for Bilfinger Middle East as it seeks to strengthen its footprint in Egypt. KIMA, a state-controlled producer of nitrogen-based fertilisers and chemicals, boasts nearly 70 years of industry expertise and is currently undertaking a US$300 million project to enhance its production capabilities. In 2024, KIMA was listed among Egypt's top 50 companies.

“With KIMA, we are significantly expanding our involvement in Egypt and the region’s promising chemical industry,” says Christian Rugland, President of Engineering & Maintenance International at Bilfinger. “For this collaboration, we can build upon our deep engineering expertise gained with clients across industries in the Middle East. KIMA can expect the high standards we have set ourselves in line with our vision at Bilfinger to become the number one partner in enhancing efficiency and sustainability.”

Bilfinger brings decades of experience in concept, basic, detail and process engineering, as well as PMC and construction site management across sectors such as Energy, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Pharma & Biopharma, and Oil & Gas. The KIMA project involves managing third-party contractors across international sites, with different project phases taking place in Mumbai, India, and on-site in Aswan, Egypt.

This partnership demonstrates Bilfinger’s commitment to supporting the growth of Egypt’s industrial sector while continuing to deliver high-quality services in the Middle East.
