Ebara Elliott Energy’s hydrogen solutions

As global energy demand shifts toward carbon-free sources, hydrogen will play a key role. Ebara Elliott Energy (EEE), formerly Elliott Group, is adapting its proven hydrogen compression and pumping technologies to new hydrogen applications including production, pipeline transport, liquefaction, storage, and synthesis. Our hydrogen solutions include:

  • Hydrogen Compression
  • Hydrogen Transport
  • Hydrogen Storage
  • Hydrogen Fuelling Applications
  • Specialty Coatings for Compressors in Hydrogen Service

The use of hydrogen as a decarbonised fuel and for long-term energy storage involves various types of hydrogen-based solutions. These ‘solutions’ must be capable of delivering clean power via hydrogen fuel for the production, transport, storage and use of hydrogen, with lower overall emissions than alternative decarbonised energy storage technologies. Thermochemical technologies, including hydrogen as energy storage, provide the only long durations required for seasonal and daily fluctuations in renewables.

EEE has been supplying compressors for a wide range of pure hydrogen and high-hydrogen process applications since 1955. Compared to hydrogen compressors designed for refinery applications, compressors for large-scale hydrogen production will require design adaptations to accommodate higher flow rates and a variety of pressure ratios depending on the application.

To meet the challenges for high-pressure storage and high-pressure ratio pipeline applications, design efficiency and overall footprint are key considerations. EEE’s Flex-Op compressor arrangement, designed with proven Elliott compressor technology, features flexible, configurable, and economical options for hydrogen applications. The Flex-Op’s compact arrangement of four compressors on a single gearbox maximises compression capability with enough flexibility to run in series, in parallel, or both.

This design improves operational flexibility in hydrogen applications including increased head and flow capabilities and delivers improved reliability and accessibility to the rotating components for easy maintenance. The Flex-Op can engage or disengage individual compressors, switch between series and parallel operation, and run each compressor at different speeds. Most importantly for pure hydrogen compression, the process gas is safe from risk of oil contamination. Additionally, the Flex-Op design is not limited to just hydrogen applications, but is suitable for energy storage, process, refining, and chemical compression.

Hydrogen compressors operate in harsh environments that present unique fouling and corrosion challenges. EEE’s Pos-E-Coat Protect specialty coating is specifically formulated to protect critical components and safeguard against potential catastrophic issues caused by fouling and corrosion.

The Flex-Op compressor arrangement and Pos-E-Coat Protect are just two examples of EEE’s commitment to advancing technology to meet sustainability goals. Along with our parent company, Ebara Corporation, EEE is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Our product development efforts focus on providing highly reliable, efficient, and flexible turbomachinery solutions for low-carbon energy needs.

Elliott is glad to be here to support the success of ADIPEC, the world’s largest and most inclusive gathering for the energy industry. At our booth, we will present customer-centric solutions for the energy transition, including hybrid compressor pump solutions for carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), ammonia canned pumps for power plants, and compression solutions for natural gas pipelines and for hydrogen.
We look forward to meeting and talking with all of you at our booth and during the conference.
