Gas to play pivotal role in future energy mix for Egypt
During an energy talk titled, The Future Ahead: Strengthening Egypt’s leadership in the energy sector, His Excellency Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources, Arab Republic of Egypt, described a very positive future for the country with respect to its energy mix.
“The energy outlook for Egypt is very bright considering the need for gas as a resource for years to come and the role that it plays in the energy transition. We have taken a very strong commitment to accelerate our goals and increase renewable energy to 42% by 2030 and that really gives us the opportunity to unlock the potential of oil and gas within the sector.”
Moreover, Egypt seeks to leverage its position as a regional hub with infrastructure that has been built up over many years.
“With export capacity of 12 million tonnes per year and almost 40 million tonnes of refining capacity in Egypt, and at the same time we also have petrochemical infrastructure, so all of that supports Egypt's potential with gas, which is seeing a lot of renewed activity,’ he said.
Whether it's oil or gas with lower carbon intensity, H.E. Badawi believes that an energy mix is the best way forward, and the focus needs to be on energy efficiency.
“We must first consider how we can be efficient in the use of the energy to make sure that we are not wasting energy. The second part is how we can work in terms of accelerating, also incentives, to be able to develop energy resources.”
Acknowledging the UAE for bridging the gap and promoting best practices within the energy sector spanning four decades, he affirmed how important collaboration is to accelerating the energy transition and invited participants to EGYPES taking place in Cairo, Egypt from 17-19 February 2025.
“We want Egypt to be a platform, which is of value to everybody and we are also fostering an environment where we're all together to be able to unlock the potential of the region for the benefit of the world.”
