Helical Fusion, a pioneering startup on a mission to realise the world’s first steady-state nuclear fusion reactor, is honoured to announce its selection as a finalist in the prestigious Climatech Challenge at the upcoming Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPES) 2025.

Humanity urgently needs a sustainable energy source, but current options – thermal power, nuclear fission, and renewables – are insufficient. Fusion energy, replicating the sun’s power on Earth, offers the ultimate solution. Helical Fusion’s vision is to deploy fusion reactors globally, collaborating with governments and power companies to secure a stable, sustainable energy supply. By doing so, the company aims to address one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: the need for clean and abundant energy.

The company stands apart with its expertise in the “Large Helical Device” (LHD), developed at the National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS). The LHD holds the world record for continuous plasma operation of 3,000 seconds – far surpassing other leading facilities – proving the unparalleled stability essential for commercial fusion power. Notably, its reactor design provides unique advantages: stable, year-round power supply, ease of maintenance, and a compact 200-meter footprint, making it ideal for space-constrained facilities.

Commercialisation of groundbreaking technology

Helical Fusion is moving forward at the fastest possible speed with the commercialisation of this groundbreaking technology, building on the vast knowledge of a government-led R&D project over several decades and billions of US dollars of investment.

At EGYPES 2025, Helical Fusion’s Co-Founder and CEO, Takaya Taguchi, will deliver a pitch on Monday, 17 February, showcasing the groundbreaking potential of the Helical Stellarator. This year’s winning startup will receive over US $35,000 in prizes and incentives to support their business growth.

With over 47,000 attendees expected at EGYPES 2025, including global leaders, innovators, and policymakers, Helical Fusion is proud to represent the development of a fusion power plant in Japan as the only company specialising in this field among the Climatech Challenge finalists.

“We are thrilled to bring our vision of sustainable fusion energy to the global stage at EGYPES,” said Takaya Taguchi, Co-Founder and CEO of Helical Fusion. “Fusion has immense potential to transform the way we power the world, and we are proud to represent this field as part of the Climatech Challenge.”

The Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPES) is one of the MENA region’s most prominent energy industry events, addressing the challenges and opportunities in energy transition. Helical Fusion’s participation underscores the growing recognition of nuclear fusion as a key player in achieving global decarbonisation goals.
