A global platform for India’s energy ambitions
India Energy Week (IEW) 2025, the second-largest energy event globally, begins today—underscoring India’s growing importance in the global energy landscape. Taking place from February 11 to 14 at the state-of-the-art Yashobhoomi in Dwarka, New Delhi, under the patronage of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and organised by Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry, the events bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to discuss pressing issues and emerging opportunities in the energy sector.
India’s energy market and outlook
India is the world's third-largest energy consumer and is set to drive nearly 25% of global energy demand growth over the next two decades. The country’s energy mix is undergoing a significant transformation, with a focus on reducing dependence on fossil fuels while ensuring energy security and affordability. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, India imported about 85% of its crude oil needs and 55% of its natural gas demand in 2024.
The Indian government is actively working to reduce import dependency through increased domestic exploration and production, strategic reserves, and alternative fuel adoption. In 2024, India has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, with solar and wind energy forming the backbone of this transition. The country is also emerging as a leader in green hydrogen, aiming to produce five million metric tonnes annually by 2030.
With rising urbanisation and industrialisation, India’s electricity demand is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5% over the next decade, according to the Central Electricity Authority forcasts. The expansion of power infrastructure, including smart grids and energy storage systems, is critical to ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply. The Indian government’s initiatives, including the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Production Linked Incentives (PLI) for renewable energy manufacturing, and gas grid expansion, are all geared towards building a resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem.
India’s rising role in the global energy market
As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, India plays a pivotal role in shaping global energy dynamics. The country’s demand for energy is surging, driven by rapid industrialisation, urbanisation, and economic expansion. With a strong commitment to ensuring energy security, affordability, and sustainability, India has been diversifying its sources of energy and enhancing its production capabilities. His Excellency Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, emphasised India’s role in ensuring long-term energy security through strategic diversification and investment in resilient energy infrastructure, highlighting that India’s energy policy is driven by a clear vision of securing stable and affordable energy supplies while advancing towards a sustainable future.
The country’s robust energy partnerships, including increased imports from the United States and expanded engagements with new suppliers such as Argentina and Angola, reflect this strategy. Puri reaffirmed that India’s energy decisions are guided by self-reliance and market-driven principles, ensuring economic resilience amid global uncertainties.
The evolution of India Energy Week
India Energy Week has rapidly evolved into a crucial event on the global energy calendar. Building on the success of its previous editions, this year’s edition serve as a dynamic platform for fostering international collaboration, enabling stakeholders to explore investment opportunities and share best practices. With over 700 exhibitors, 9 thematic zones, and a wide array of business networking events, the event offers unparalleled opportunities to connect with key players across the energy value chain.
Puri also highlighted the inclusion of leading companies and organisations, noting that the third edition of India Energy Week 2025 provides an invaluable opportunity to discover innovative solutions, forge partnerships, and drive progress in the energy sector. A key highlight of IEW 2025 is its comprehensive three-track conference program, which facilitates discussions on critical aspects of the global energy sector. The program includes Strategic Conference, focusing on energy security and investments; the Technical Conference, showcasing technological innovations and industry best practices; and the Leadership Roundtables, fostering global collaboration among CEOs, ministers, and decision-makers.
India Energy Week 2025’s focus on energy access, security, affordability, and sustainability aligns with India’s vision of fostering a just and inclusive energy transition. The event is expected to drive actionable outcomes, enabling partnerships that transcend borders and advance global energy goals.
With its unparalleled scale, focus on innovation, and commitment to fostering collaboration, India Energy Week 2025 is poised to position India at the forefront of the global energy transition. As the world’s second-largest energy event, it serves as a catalyst for change, driving progress and innovation in the energy sector while strengthening India’s role as a global leader.
