Unlocking upstream energy decarbonisation: a three-phase approach

In an exclusive studio interview with Energy Connects at Gastech 2024, Ramya Sethurathinam, Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), discussed the progress upstream energy companies are making towards decarbonisation. She highlighted that decarbonisation efforts can be divided into three key phases. Sethurathinam explained that these phases begin with understanding the problem—companies must establish a clear baseline of their emissions, identifying the largest contributors and where interventions will be most effective. She noted that over the past three to five years, many operators have made significant strides by leveraging technology to track and analyse their emissions profiles. She further emphasised that true progress lies in the effective implementation of these plans, with companies making tangible efforts to reduce their carbon footprint through operational changes, technological innovations, and partnerships across the energy sector.
